MATERIALS CASE STUDIES

Air Injection Pipe Examination

An internal inspection of a blend tank revealed that a support securing an air injection pipe had failed, leaving the pipe to move freely in currents produced by agitation of the tank contents. Stress Engineering determined the cause of the exfoliation corrosion and cracking, and recommended procedures to prevent a recurrence.

Armored Choke Hose

A new 3-inch armored choke hose was deemed to be ?ballooning? when being pressure tested on a drilling rig. This hose was sent to Stress Engineering for determining the cause of the ballooning.

Leaking Shrimp Trawler

An epoxy/fiberglass coating was applied to the wooden hull of a shrimp trawler. Stress was retained to examine the epoxy coating to determine why the refurbished vessel was leaking.

Plant Air Compressor System Pinion

A pinion used to drive a plant air compressor failed multiple times, leading to concern about reliability of the system. Stress Engineering was engaged to examine the pinion and determine the cause of the tooth failures.

Heater Tube Fire Investigation

A fire in a refinery?s CCR unit destroyed all of the heater tubes inside four cells. A finite element analysis was performed on the header identified as having lowest hardness values to estimate remaining creep life.
