Creep is one of the most common damage mechanisms of concern at elevated temperatures. Creep testing of service-exposed material is a valuable tool in extending the service lives of high temperature components. This presentation will address several aspects of creep testing of service-exposed components, ranging from questions regarding size, geometry, and orientation of the test specimens to test conditions and how these factors may affect the test results and their interpretation. Case studies from metallurgical assessment and creep testing of several high-temperature alloys will be used to illustrate these points and to try to correlate microstructural changes with the creep properties.
