High Pressure/High Temperature

For nearly 50 years, Stress Engineering Services has been providing solutions for clients throughout the energy industry.  This includes significant experience in High Pressure / High Temperature (HPHT) applications [>15,000 psi (103 MPa) and >350°F (177°C)].  These solutions have included testing, analysis, and materials evaluation of equipment designed for harsh HPHT environments, and is complemented by our direct participation in the development of related industry standards.

HPHT Testing

  • Equipment capabilities for combined load testing:
    • Gas pressures to 45,000 psi (310 MPa) or higher and liquid pressures to 60,000 psi (414 MPa) or higher
    • Tension to 6,000,000 lb (26,700 kN) and compression to 4,700,000 lb (20,900 kN) and beyond
    • Bending to 13,500,000 ft-lb (18,300 kN-m)
    • Temperatures to 700°F (371°C) or higher
  • General developmental testing, qualification testing, cycle testing, and failure testing under combined loads of pressure, tension/compression, bending, and temperature
  • Tubular qualification testing per ISO 13679/API 5C5 with pressure, tension/compression, bending, and temperature
  • Valves, chokes, seals, and connector system qualification testing per API 6A, Annex F (PR2) and API 17D
  • Custom testing of a wide range of completion equipment, safety valves, packers, etc. in environments at pressure and temperature

HPHT Materials

  • Full-scale sour service environmental (H2S and CO2) testing of components at pressure and temperature
  • Materials sour service environmental (H2S and CO2) fatigue testing
  • Fracture mechanics material testing
  • Fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) testing at temperature
  • S-N materials fatigue testing at temperatures up to 2000°F (1093°C)
  • Non-metallic materials testing in various environments of fluid, temperature, and pressure
  • Full metallurgical laboratory facilities including scanning electron microscope (SEM) with staff of experienced metallurgists to evaluate fitness-for-service of materials along with failure analysis

HPHT Design / Analysis

  • Design and manufacture of ASME-coded Div 3 pressure vessels for HPHT testing
  • Third-party review of design verification and validation documentation for HPHT equipment
  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis for various conditions including multi-phase flow
  • Finite element analysis (FEA) of systems and components:
    • Limit-load analysis
    • Elastic-plastic analysis
    • Heat-transfer analysis (steady-state and transient)
  • Fracture mechanics fatigue analysis
  • Design of subsurface safety valves and other completion equipment
